Overview

The Evident Vanta Element (Evident is the company formerly known as Olympus IMS) is a handheld energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analyser. You hold its nose flat against a sample, pull the trigger, and in seconds the screen names the alloy grade and shows the elemental breakdown — no cutting, no acid, no mark left on the piece. Be clear about what XRF is: it excites and reads only the outermost surface of an object, an information depth measured in microns. The Vanta Element is an assay and verification instrument. It cannot search the ground and will not find buried or hidden gold at any depth; that is the job of a ground-search detector. Excitation comes from a 2-watt X-ray tube with a 35 kV tungsten anode behind a fixed aluminium primary-beam filter, read by an entry-level silicon drift detector with a graphene window and Evident's Axon electronics; Evident states this generation analyses up to two times faster than the previous Element models. The build matches the work: IP54 protection against dust and splashing water, a MIL-STD-810G 1.2 m drop rating, a stainless-steel faceplate, toolless window replacement and continuous testing at 100% duty cycle from −10 °C to 45 °C. An 800 × 480 capacitive touchscreen puts alloy grade comparison on screen, and the Linux platform with Evident Connect handles cloud data management and automatic updates. Because it emits X-rays, import, possession and operator training are regulated in most markets, including the UAE — check the requirements before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Vanta Element find gold in the ground?
No, and no XRF analyser can. X-ray fluorescence only excites the outermost few microns of a sample you physically hold against the instrument's nose, so it has no reach whatsoever into soil, rock or walls. Use a ground-search detector (Minelab GPX or GPZ, Garrett Axiom) to find the gold, then use the Vanta Element afterwards to confirm what you actually found.
Will it give me an accurate karat reading on jewellery?
It accurately measures the surface it can see. On a solid, clean, flat piece that is the whole story. But XRF is a surface technique, so heavy plating, gold-filled or rolled-gold construction, rhodium coating, solder joints and the surface enrichment left by acid pickling can all return a figure that does not represent the core. Test several spots, and file or cut a fresh face on anything suspect before you buy.
What is the difference between the Vanta Element and the Element-S?
They share the same chassis, screen and software. The Element uses a 2 W, 35 kV tungsten-anode tube with a fixed aluminium filter and an entry-level silicon drift detector, and weighs 1.71 kg with battery. The Element-S steps up to a 4 W, 50 kV silver-anode tube with a four-position filter wheel and a faster detector, adding light-element detection of magnesium, aluminium, silicon, sulfur and phosphorus, at 1.84 kg with battery. If you only sort steels and precious metals, the Element is the right model; the Element-S is for aluminium alloys and light-element work.
Does an X-ray analyser need a licence, and is it safe to use?
It emits X-rays only while the trigger is held and the tube is energised, and the beam fires forward out of the nose, so the safe habit is simple: never point it at anyone, never test a sample held in your hand, and use the optional field stand or soil foot for hands-free work. Because it is a radiation-emitting device, registration, storage and operator training are regulated in most countries — in the UAE by FANR and the relevant local authority. Confirm the requirements that apply in your country before ordering.
