Each of those rewards a different machine, and getting that match right is the main thing worth thinking about before you buy. For meteorite work on open desert pavement, coverage matters more than depth: a general-purpose VLF with strong discrimination and a large coil lets you walk ground efficiently all day and separate meteorite iron from modern scrap. Iron and stony-iron meteorites read strongly on almost any detector, which is what makes southern Morocco such rewarding ground.
For gold and mineral targets in the Anti-Atlas quartz country, a high-frequency machine such as the Minelab Gold Monster 1000 or Garrett Goldmaster 24K is well matched to small targets near vein outcrops. Where ironstone and hot rocks unsettle a VLF, a pulse-induction detector — the Minelab GPX series or Garrett Axiom — holds its ground balance and keeps working. Weight and battery life deserve as much thought as depth: on the reg you cover distance in heat, and the machine you can carry all day is the one that finds things.

How to choose
- Match the machine to what you are hunting. Meteorites on open reg, gold in Anti-Atlas quartz and mineral specimens each favour a different setup, and choosing on that basis matters more than choosing on price.
- For meteorite hunting on the pre-Saharan reg around Erfoud, Rissani and Zagora, coverage beats depth: a general-purpose VLF with strong discrimination and a large coil lets you walk open pavement efficiently all day.
- Iron and stony-iron meteorites read strongly on almost any metal detector; stony meteorites read weakly or not at all. Knowing which you are hunting decides whether a detector is the right tool at all.
- In the Anti-Atlas quartz and mineral ground, a high-frequency machine such as the Minelab Gold Monster 1000 handles small targets well, and pulse-induction is worth it only where mineralised ironstone defeats a VLF.
- Plan for heat and distance rather than depth records: battery life, weight and a comfortable harness decide how much ground you actually cover on the reg.

Where is the gold in Morocco?

Can a metal detector find meteorites?
Iron and stony-iron meteorites contain enough metal to read strongly on almost any detector, and southern Morocco's desert pavement is among the best ground on earth for finding them — dark stones show up visually on pale reg, and a detector confirms and finds what the eye misses. Stony meteorites, which are the majority of falls, contain far less metal and may read weakly or not at all; those are found mainly by eye and experience. Knowing which type you are hunting decides how useful a detector will actually be.
Which coil should I choose for Moroccan ground?
On the open reg of the south, a large coil is the right call — you are covering distance, and every extra centimetre of sweep width adds up over a day's walking. In Anti-Atlas quartz country and around old workings, a smaller coil is more useful: it separates close targets, works around rock and scrub, and picks up the small gold that a big coil sweeps over. Most machines we sell take both, and buying a second coil is usually a better upgrade than moving to a more expensive detector.
Which machine would you recommend for Moroccan ground?
It depends entirely on the target. For meteorite work on open reg, a general-purpose VLF with strong discrimination and a large coil covers ground efficiently and separates meteorite iron from modern scrap. For small gold and mineral targets in Anti-Atlas quartz country, a high-frequency machine such as the Gold Monster 1000 is better suited. Pulse-induction is worth its cost only where mineralised ironstone makes a VLF unusable.
