Ghana has produced more gold than any other country in Africa in recent years, and almost all of it comes from one structure: the Ashanti belt, running south-west from Konongo through Obuasi, Bibiani, Prestea and Tarkwa toward the coast. Obuasi has been mined for well over a century, and the towns along the belt are built on gold in the most literal sense.
Ghana is geologically unusual in West Africa because it hosts two different kinds of gold ground side by side. The Birimian rocks carry classic vein and shear-hosted gold, the same greenstone story that runs through Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea. But the Tarkwaian sequence is something else — ancient conglomerates, fossil placers where gold was concentrated by rivers billions of years ago and then buried and hardened. Detecting over Tarkwaian ground behaves differently from detecting over Birimian shear zones, and prospectors who move between them notice it quickly.
The practical challenge across both is depth of weathering. Southern Ghana is wet and tropical, and the saprolite — the soft, deeply rotted rock above fresh bedrock — can run tens of metres thick, red with iron and heavily mineralised. That combination is exactly what defeats cheap detectors: the ground signal swamps small targets, and anything without genuine ground balance becomes unusable within minutes. This is pulse-induction and ZVT territory. The Minelab GPX 6000, GPX 5000 and GPZ 7000, and the Garrett Axiom, are the machines that hold their composure in it, while a high-frequency VLF like the Gold Monster 1000 remains the better tool for fine gold in worked tailings and stream gravels.

How to choose
- Deep, iron-rich saprolite across the Ashanti belt is what breaks cheap detectors. A pulse-induction or ZVT machine — Minelab GPX 6000/5000, GPZ 7000, or Garrett Axiom — is the realistic starting point for serious work around Obuasi, Bibiani or Prestea.
- Tarkwaian conglomerate ground and Birimian shear zones do not behave alike under a coil. If you work both, expect to re-balance and change settings when you move between them rather than assuming one setup covers everything.
- For fine gold in tailings, worked ground and stream gravels, a high-frequency VLF such as the Minelab Gold Monster 1000 or Garrett Goldmaster 24K recovers small pieces that a deep PI will pass over.
- Southern Ghana is wet for much of the year. If you will detect through the rains or work stream margins, choose a sealed machine — the Minelab SDC 2300 and Garrett ATX are fully waterproof pulse detectors built for it.
- Coil size is a real decision here: a large coil buys depth on open ground, a smaller one is far more usable in worked pits, scrub and close terrain where most artisanal work actually happens.
- Ask about spares and support before you buy, not after. Coils, batteries and cables are the parts that fail in a working season, and knowing they can be replaced quickly matters more than a spec-sheet difference.
