Overview

The Presidium Diamond Mate A/C is a handheld thermal-conductivity tester built for the everyday work of the jewellery counter. Press the retractable probe tip against a stone and the instrument measures how quickly that stone carries heat away — diamond conducts heat far faster than cubic zirconia, colourless sapphire, glass and the other simulants that circulate in the trade, so the LED readout and buzzer give a verdict in seconds. A spring-loaded tip applies the same pressure on every test, which is what makes repeat readings agree with each other, and there is no cool-down wait between stones, so a whole parcel can be checked in one sitting. At 160 × 21 × 30 mm it fits a shirt pocket, and the 0.6 mm tip — which Presidium states is the industry's thinnest — reaches into pavé and channel settings to test stones down to 0.02 ct, polished or unpolished, loose or mounted in an open-back setting. A metal alert buzzer tells you when the tip has slipped off the stone onto the metal, so you are never fooled by a reading taken on the mount. One limitation matters and Presidium states it plainly: moissanite conducts heat almost as well as diamond and will read as diamond on any thermal-only tester, so a moissanite check needs a separate electrical-conductivity instrument. Two variants share the same probe — PDMT-A runs on three AAA alkaline cells for about seven hours, PDMT-C on an inset rechargeable pack for about six hours or straight from the supplied 120/230 V adaptor. This is a contact instrument for the bench and the counter; it plays no part in searching ground for buried gold or stones.

Frequently asked questions

Can it tell moissanite from diamond?
No. Moissanite conducts heat almost as well as diamond, so it reads as diamond on the Diamond Mate — as it does on any thermal-only tester. Presidium states this openly and offers a separate electrical-conductivity moissanite tester for that step. Use the Diamond Mate to clear cubic zirconia, sapphire, glass and the other common simulants, then screen anything that passes with a second instrument.
Will it find diamonds or gold buried in the ground?
No. This is a contact instrument: the probe tip must physically touch the stone, so it has no depth or search capability of any kind. It is used at the counter or on the bench, on stones already in hand. To search ground for gold you need a metal detector — the Diamond Mate is the step after the find, not before it.
What is the difference between PDMT-A and PDMT-C?
The probe, the electronics and the results are identical — only the power supply differs. PDMT-A takes three AAA alkaline cells and runs about seven hours continuously, weighing 40 g without batteries. PDMT-C has an inset rechargeable pack good for about six hours and can also run directly from the supplied 120/230 V AC adaptor, weighing 80 g with its battery. Choose PDMT-A for field portability, PDMT-C for a busy counter with mains power nearby.
How small a stone can it test, and can I test mounted stones?
Presidium rates it for diamonds as small as 0.02 ct, polished or unpolished, loose or mounted in an open-back setting — the 0.6 mm tip is thin enough for pavé work. For reliable readings Presidium specifies an optimal operating temperature of 18–27 °C, and the metal alert buzzer confirms the tip is on the stone rather than on the mount before you trust the result.
