Overview

The Presidium Gem Tester II is a contact instrument, not a metal detector: you touch a retractable thermoelectric probe to the stone and the needle settles on a calibrated analogue scale that reads relative heat conduction. Because every gem species conducts heat at its own rate, a single reading is enough to separate up to 16 common coloured stones and to place diamonds and moissanites at the high end of the dial. Presidium's probe tip measures 0.6 mm — the thinnest in the industry by the maker's own claim — so it reaches stones as small as 0.02 ct, including melee already set in a mounting, and the spring-loaded mount holds probe pressure constant so readings repeat instead of drifting. It is built for jewellers, gold-souk buyers, pawnbrokers and stone dealers who need a fast opinion across the counter. It handles polished, rough and surface-treated material, and needs no waiting time between tests. Glass and Calibration (CAL) reference discs are built into the housing so you can re-check a reading on the spot, and a metal alert buzzer confirms the probe has made proper contact. Two limits are worth stating plainly: thermal conductivity cannot separate diamond from moissanite — the dial groups them together — and Presidium states the instrument does not differentiate natural from synthetic coloured gemstones. Treat it as a fast screening and sorting tool that narrows the field before a laboratory report, not as a substitute for certification. Frequently asked questions

Can the Gem Tester II find gold or gemstones buried in the ground?
No. It is a contact instrument: the probe tip must physically touch a stone you are already holding or that is set in a piece of jewellery. It has no search coil, no detection field and no ground-penetration capability of any kind, so it cannot locate anything buried. If you are prospecting, you need a ground-search metal detector — the PGT II is a counter and bench tool for identifying stones you already have in hand.
Can it tell a diamond from a moissanite?
Not on its own. Diamond and moissanite conduct heat very similarly, which is why Presidium groups them together at the high end of the dial rather than claiming to separate them. The PGT II will tell you a stone falls in the diamond/moissanite range — confirming which one requires a dedicated moissanite tester that adds an electrical-conductivity check, or a gemmological laboratory.
Will it identify synthetic or lab-grown coloured stones?
No. Presidium states plainly that the instrument does not differentiate between natural and synthetic coloured gemstones. A lab-grown ruby has essentially the same thermal conductivity as a natural one and reads in the same place on the dial. Use the PGT II to narrow a stone to a species quickly, then send anything of real value for a laboratory report — it is a screening tool, not a substitute for certification.
How small a stone can it read, and how is it powered?
The retractable probe tip is 0.6 mm across — stated by Presidium as the industry's thinnest — so it reads stones down to 0.02 ct, including small melee still set in a mounting. It runs about three hours of continuous use on two AA alkaline batteries, or indefinitely from the supplied universal AC adaptor for bench work, and the built-in Glass and CAL reference discs let you verify calibration between readings.
