Overview

The Presidium Multi Tester III (PMuT III) is a handheld contact instrument for the jewellery counter — not a ground-search detector. It combines two measurements in a single retractable probe: thermal conductivity, which separates diamond from most colourless simulants, and electrical conductivity, which is the only dependable way to tell diamond from moissanite. Moissanite conducts heat almost as well as diamond and routinely fools thermal-only pens; the electrical reading settles it. Touch the tip to a clean, dry stone and the 180-degree LED display and audible tone report diamond, moissanite, another stone, or metal. Presidium states the 0.6 mm retractable tip is the industry's thinnest, which lets the instrument read stones from 0.02 ct — melee, pavé and stones still in their mounting. A metal alert buzzer tells you when the tip has landed on the setting instead of the stone, so an invalid reading is obvious. The body is ambidextrous with a rubberised anti-slip grip, measures 165 × 25 × 40 mm and weighs 54 g without batteries; three AAA cells give roughly seven hours of continuous use, with automatic power-off and a low-battery indicator, and an AC port accepts Presidium's power adaptor (sold separately). Presidium specifies an optimal working range of 18–27 °C, worth remembering in Gulf and Sahel shops: let the instrument and the stone settle indoors before testing. It verifies stone identity only — it does not grade colour, clarity or weight, and it cannot locate buried metal.

Key Features

Dual electro-thermal measurement separates diamond from moissanite — a call thermal-only testers cannot make
Also identifies common colourless simulants: sapphire, spinel, cubic zirconia and zircon
Retractable thermoelectric probe with a 0.6 mm tip, stated by Presidium as the industry's thinnest, testing stones from 0.02 ct
Metal alert buzzer warns when the tip lands on the mounting instead of the stone
180-degree multi-viewing LED display, readable from either side of the counter
Ambidextrous body with rubberised anti-slip grip for right- or left-handed use
Ready to test in about 20 seconds; automatic power-off and low-battery indicator conserve cells
3 × AAA alkaline batteries give roughly 7 hours of continuous use; AC port accepts the Presidium power adaptor (sold separately)

Frequently asked questions

Can the Multi Tester III find gold or buried metal?
No. It is a contact instrument: the probe tip must physically touch the item being tested. Its metal alert only tells you the tip has landed on metal — usually the setting rather than the stone — so you know to reposition and retest. To search ground for buried gold you need a metal detector; this is a counter-top verification tool for stones.
Why does it measure electrical conductivity as well as heat?
Because moissanite conducts heat almost as well as diamond, thermal-only testers frequently call it a diamond. The Multi Tester III takes an electrical conductivity reading through the same probe: moissanite conducts electricity, diamond essentially does not, so the two separate cleanly. The thermal side handles the rest — colourless sapphire, spinel, cubic zirconia and zircon.
What is the smallest stone it can test, and can I test stones already set?
Presidium states the 0.6 mm retractable tip is the industry's thinnest and tests stones from 0.02 ct, so melee and pavé are within reach. Set stones can be tested provided the tip reaches a clean, dry, flat facet — if the buzzer signals metal you have touched the mounting, so reposition and read again.
Are batteries included, and does shop temperature affect readings?
Neither batteries nor the mains adaptor are included: it takes 3 × AAA alkaline cells for about 7 hours of continuous use, and the AC port accepts Presidium's power adaptor, sold separately. Temperature does matter — Presidium specifies an optimal range of 18–27 °C, so in Gulf and Sahel shops let both the instrument and the stone settle indoors before testing rather than reading a stone brought straight in from the heat.
