The Thermo Scientific Niton DXL is a countertop EDXRF precious-metal analyser that reads the composition and karat purity of gold, silver, platinum and palladium in seconds, with AuDIT technology to expose gold plating — non-destructively, without acids.
Overview
The Niton DXL is a countertop energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer built for one job: telling you exactly what a piece of metal is made of. Place an item in the shielded test chamber, close the lid, and the analyser returns the elemental composition and karat value of gold, silver, platinum and palladium in seconds — no acids, no filing, no cutting and no manual calibration. Thermo Scientific's AuDIT technology flags gold-plated and counterfeit pieces immediately, which is the single most valuable function for anyone buying scrap gold across a counter. One important point: this is a contact assay instrument, not a ground-search detector. It analyses the surface of an object placed inside it and cannot locate buried gold. Excitation comes from a silver-anode X-ray tube running up to 45 kV / 80 µA, paired with a high-performance Si-PIN semiconductor detector and a 4096-channel analyser; the standard analytical range covers 22 elements including all the precious metals. A colour touchscreen and an internal CCD camera make sample positioning straightforward, with an 8 mm measurement area as standard and an optional 3 mm small-spot focus for clasps, settings and solder joints. Onboard electronics hold more than 10,000 readings with their spectra, and results transfer to a PC over USB using Niton Data Transfer software. At 7.7 kg, and able to run from either the AC adapter or a 7.2 V lithium-ion battery pack, it is a countertop instrument that can still travel to a buying room or a souk stall. It suits jewellers, gold buyers, pawnbrokers, refiners and assay offices.
