The Niton DXL is a countertop energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer built for one job: telling you exactly what a piece of metal is made of. Place an item in the shielded test chamber, close the lid, and the analyser returns the elemental composition and karat value of gold, silver, platinum and palladium in seconds — no acids, no filing, no cutting and no manual calibration. Thermo Scientific's AuDIT technology flags gold-plated and counterfeit pieces immediately, which is the single most valuable function for anyone buying scrap gold across a counter. One important point: this is a contact assay instrument, not a ground-search detector. It analyses the surface of an object placed inside it and cannot locate buried gold. Excitation comes from a silver-anode X-ray tube running up to 45 kV / 80 µA, paired with a high-performance Si-PIN semiconductor detector and a 4096-channel analyser; the standard analytical range covers 22 elements including all the precious metals. A colour touchscreen and an internal CCD camera make sample positioning straightforward, with an 8 mm measurement area as standard and an optional 3 mm small-spot focus for clasps, settings and solder joints. Can the Niton DXL find gold in the ground?
No. The DXL is a countertop assay instrument: it measures the composition of an object you place inside its test chamber, and it reads only the surface of that object. It has no ground-search capability at all. To locate buried gold you need a metal detector — a pulse-induction or VLF prospecting machine — and the DXL is what you use afterwards to prove that what you recovered really is gold, and at what purity.
How does it tell solid gold from gold plating?
XRF excites the surface layer of a sample, so a well-plated item can look like high-karat gold on a naive measurement. The DXL includes Thermo Scientific AuDIT technology, which examines the spectrum for the signature of a thin gold layer sitting over a different base metal and warns you when a piece is plated. On unusual or heavily built-up items, taking a second reading at a different point — or a traditional cut test on scrap — remains sound practice.
Does testing damage the jewellery?
No. XRF analysis is entirely non-destructive. There are no acids, no filing and no cutting, and nothing touches the piece except the floor of the chamber, so mounted stones, hallmarks and finished surfaces are left exactly as they were. No sample preparation and no manual calibration are required — you simply position the item using the built-in camera and read the result.
Is it practical to run in a shop, and what does it need?
Yes — the DXL was designed for countertop retail use. The sample sits inside a fully enclosed, shielded test chamber rather than in an open beam, and the unit is CE and RoHS certified. It runs from a 110/220 V AC adapter or a 7.2 V 4-cell lithium-ion battery pack, so at 7.7 kg it can also be carried to a buying room or an off-site purchase. Note that national rules on owning and operating X-ray-producing equipment vary — check your country's radiation-protection requirements before importing.
