Overview

The Thermo Scientific Niton XL2 800 is a handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer built for rapid, nondestructive identification of metal alloys. From turn-on to trigger-pull it delivers near-instant elemental results, making it the value choice for scrap-metal recycling, positive material identification (PMI) and final-product quality control. Sealed against moisture and dust and ruggedly built, it suits non-technical operators in demanding industrial environments. Powered by a silver-anode X-ray tube (45 kV, 80 µA) and a high-performance semiconductor detector, the XL2 800 covers a standard analytical range of up to 30 elements from sulfur to uranium and identifies common families including stainless and low-alloy steels, nickel, titanium, cobalt, copper and aluminium alloys, plus precious metals. A fixed-angle colour touchscreen, integrated sample camera, multi-language menus and USB/Bluetooth data transfer round out the package, with onboard storage for more than 10,000 readings.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Niton XL2 800 analyze?
It is a handheld XRF analyzer for metals: it identifies alloy grades and measures elemental composition across up to 30 elements from sulfur to uranium, covering stainless and low-alloy steels, nickel, titanium, cobalt, copper and aluminium alloys, plus precious metals. It is not a ground-search gold detector.
Is the measurement destructive, and how fast is it?
No — XRF analysis is fully nondestructive. You point the analyzer at the sample, pull the trigger and read elemental results on the screen within seconds, leaving the part unmarked.
How are results stored and transferred?
The analyzer stores more than 10,000 readings with their spectra on board and transfers data to a PC via USB, Bluetooth or RS-232 using the included Niton Data Transfer (NDT) software.
What is the warranty and power source?
It runs on a rechargeable 6-cell lithium-ion battery (roughly 6–8 hours per charge) with a 110/220 VAC charger, and carries a 1-year manufacturer warranty.
