Overview

The GER Detect Titan 400 Smart is a multi-system search kit whose most useful component is also its most conventional and the only one you can verify yourself: a VLF electromagnetic metal detector running at 10 kHz with a 30 cm search coil. That is proper detecting hardware — you sweep it, it responds to metal under the coil, and the VLF screen gives you ferrous and non-ferrous indication, adjustable sensitivity and an iron-elimination setting so you can walk past nails and bottle caps. At 10 kHz with a 30 cm coil, realistic field performance is roughly 25 cm on a coin-sized target and around a metre on a large buried mass, depending on soil, mineralisation and how the target sits. GER Detect quotes up to 3 m for the VLF system; that is a manufacturer figure. The coil detaches from the shaft, and the unit switches automatically to the matching system the moment a different sensor or antenna is fitted, so there is no mode menu to work through in the field. Beyond the coil, the manufacturer lists three further modes driven by the plug-in sensors and the two antennas supplied in the case: a long-range sensing system for which GER Detect specifies a front range up to 3,000 m and depth up to 25 m, an ionic-field system aimed at long-buried caches, and a voids detection system for cavities. These are long-range locator technologies — we list them exactly as the manufacturer describes them rather than as measured performance, and our honest advice is to buy the Titan 400 Smart for the VLF system you can test, and treat the remaining modes as supplementary survey tools. The control unit itself is well built: a 98 × 57 mm full-colour touchscreen at 480 × 270 px, a six-language interface (German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic), a 27 Wh internal lithium-ion battery rated by GER Detect at about 10 hours, a dynamic speaker covering 350–5,500 Hz at 84 ±3 dB, and rechargeable wired plus Bluetooth headphones. The unit weighs 595 g and the coil 675 g, with the complete kit in its 620 × 430 × 200 mm protective case coming to 6,620 g. GER Detect states CE and ISO 9001 certification, and the detector ships with a two-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the Titan 400 Smart's four systems actually detects metal the way a normal detector does?
The VLF electromagnetic system. It runs at 10 kHz with a Ø 30 cm coil and works exactly like a conventional metal detector — you sweep the coil, metal beneath it produces a signal, and the screen shows ferrous or non-ferrous with adjustable sensitivity and iron elimination. Realistically expect around 25 cm on a coin-sized target and roughly 1.2 m on a large buried mass, depending on soil and mineralisation. GER Detect lists up to 3 m for this system; that is the manufacturer's figure. The long-range, ionic-field and voids modes work on a different principle and are listed here as GER Detect describes them.
Is the 25 metre depth figure real?
That figure comes from GER Detect and applies to the long-range and ionic-field modes, not to the search coil. We publish it because it is the manufacturer's published specification, but we do not assert it in our own voice — long-range locator technology as a class has not been independently verified under controlled conditions. Buy the Titan 400 Smart for the VLF coil, which you can test on the day it arrives, and treat the long-range modes as a survey aid. If measurable, repeatable depth is your priority, ask us about pulse-induction detectors instead.
What is in the case, and how do you switch between the systems?
The case holds the control unit, the Ø 30 cm VLF coil, the ionic field sensor, the long-range sensing sensor, two antennas, the shaft with handle and armrest, rechargeable wired and Bluetooth headphones, mains and car chargers, a multi-purpose shovel and the warranty card. Assembly is tool-free apart from the plastic screw that secures the coil. Switching systems is automatic: fit the coil, a sensor or an antenna and the unit loads the matching mode, so there is no configuration menu to work through in the field.
How long does it run, and will it cope with Gulf and Sahel heat?
The internal 27 Wh lithium-ion battery is rated by GER Detect at about 10 hours, which covers a full day's searching, and both a mains charger and a car charger are supplied so you can top up between sites. The manufacturer states an operating range of 0 °C to 70 °C and up to 95 % non-condensing humidity, which covers UAE, Saudi and Sahel summer conditions. The interface runs in Arabic among its six languages, the complete kit weighs 6,620 g in its protective case, and the detector carries a two-year manufacturer warranty.
