Overview

The Lorenz DeepMax Z2 is a high-end German-made pulse-induction metal detector for professional prospectors, treasure hunters and archaeologists. Building on the Z1 with higher sensitivity, greater depth and simpler operation, it is built around the Pulse Ground Balancing System (Pulse GBS) enhanced by Pulse Shaping Technology (PST): short, intense magnetic pulses induce eddy currents in buried metal that are read back during a time-delayed receive phase. Pulse GBS is designed for searching at depth and stays largely stable over saltwater, most mineralised ground and temperature swings, with three ground-balance options (preset, two-step automatic and manual). A single-piece anodised aluminium control unit houses the latest analog-to-digital electronics and drives a customisable LC display with metal identification, giving a 000–099 conductivity reading plus ferrous / non-ferrous ID. Just three controls keep operation simple, while a sophisticated multi-channel data logger captures several tracks of ground data at once. With the optional Surfer and Lorenz Scripter software, that data becomes 2D and 3D colour, contour and surface maps — twelve per field — turning raw signals into a readable picture of what lies below. The Z2 accepts a wide range of interchangeable waterproof search coils, from a 26–35 cm Double-D for pinpointing to large 1 m × 1 m and cable frame coils for maximum depth over big targets. It runs on low-self-discharge NiMH batteries for worldwide use, charges from 100–240 V AC, and can connect an additional battery + GPS power-bank module to double runtime in the field.

Frequently asked questions

How deep does the Lorenz DeepMax Z2 detect?
Depth depends on the coil, target size and conductivity. With large frame coils the Z2 can reach big metallic targets to around 3.8 m, while smaller Double-D coils give greater depth on small objects and more precise pinpointing.
What is the difference between live detecting and the data logger?
In live (dynamic) mode the Z2 sounds and displays targets as you sweep. In data-logger mode it records several channels along parallel tracks; Surfer and Lorenz Scripter then turn that data into twelve 2D and 3D maps per field so you can image a site before digging.
Which coils are included, and can I add others?
The basic package includes a 1 m × 1 m frame coil and a 35 cm Double-D coil. A wide range of interchangeable waterproof coils is available separately — 26 cm, 35 cm and 44 cm DD plus differential and cable frame coils up to 3 m × 3 m for maximum depth.
What powers the Z2 and how long does it run?
It uses a rechargeable low-self-discharge NiMH 12 V / 2.4 Ah battery and charges from 100–240 V AC worldwide (an optional 10–30 V DC car charger is available). An optional battery + GPS power-bank module connects to effectively double the runtime in the field. The detector carries a 5-year manufacturer warranty.
