Overview

The Fusion Light is the smallest and lightest machine in OKM's Fusion family: a single carbon rod measuring 800 × 65 × 65 mm and weighing about 700 g, with no separate control box, no harness and no shaft to assemble. Inside it OKM fits its SCMI-15-D sensor technology, a Cortex M3 32 MHz main processor with a Cortex M0 24 MHz slave, and a measurement chain that samples 1,024 values per second at 16-bit resolution. It runs two operating modes. Magnetometer is the one you will use first and most: a live scan that reads anomalies in the earth's magnetic field and reports ferrous material — iron boxes, nails, casings, buried ordnance — audibly and on screen as you walk. This is how experienced operators clear a plot of shallow iron before committing to a full survey, and it is genuinely testable hardware you can prove to yourself on the first afternoon. 3D Ground Scan is the survey mode: you walk numbered parallel lines, the rod records a grid of measurement points, and the scan builds on the phone display in real time. Everything is driven from the Android smartphone that ships in the case, linked to the rod over Bluetooth 5.1 at roughly 10 m, so there is no proprietary console to learn or replace. Completed scans transfer to the Windows notebook that is also included, where OKM Visualizer 3D Studio — a Standard Edition licence is supplied — renders them as rotatable three-dimensional graphics for judging the position, extent and relative depth of an anomaly before you dig. A 2,600 mAh lithium-ion battery gives roughly 12 hours of field time and recharges in about 3 hours, and the whole kit travels in a waterproof, shock-resistant Protector case. Two points to be clear about. The rod itself is rated IP40 and OKM states plainly that it is not waterproof, so this is a dry-ground instrument. And OKM's headline figure — that customers have found objects down to 8 m (26 ft) — is the manufacturer's own customer report rather than a measured specification; real results depend entirely on soil, target size and scan discipline. The Fusion Light is an anomaly-mapping instrument: it shows you where the ground differs, it does not identify metal type or give a conductivity number the way a coil-based VLF detector does.

How deep does the OKM Fusion Light really detect?
OKM's own wording is that customers have found objects down to 8 m (26 ft). That is a customer report published by the manufacturer, not a measured or independently verified figure, and we will not sell it to you as a guaranteed number. In practice the useful depth of any ground scanner depends on the size and contrast of the anomaly, the soil, the moisture and how carefully you walk the scan lines — a large cavity or a big buried container leaves a far stronger signature than a small object. Treat the Fusion Light as an instrument for mapping where the ground differs, then confirm with a pinpointing detector or a probe before you dig.
What is the difference between Magnetometer mode and 3D Ground Scan?
Magnetometer is a live mode: it reads anomalies in the earth's magnetic field and responds immediately, through the phone, to ferrous material near the surface — iron boxes, ordnance, nails, casings. It cannot save a measurement, and it only sees magnetic (iron-bearing) material. 3D Ground Scan is the recorded survey: you walk numbered parallel lines, the rod builds a grid of measurement points, and the file is saved for rendering in Visualizer 3D Studio, where non-metallic features such as cavities and voids can also appear as anomalies. OKM's own advice, and ours, is to run the magnetometer first to clear a plot of shallow iron so that it does not contaminate the 3D scan.
Does the kit include everything, or do I need my own phone and laptop?
Everything needed to work is supplied. The case contains the Fusion Light rod, an Android smartphone with the OKM app already installed, a Windows notebook carrying a Standard Edition licence of OKM Visualizer 3D Studio, a USB flash drive with the software, the charger and cable, a travel adapter set for use abroad and the Quick Start Guide — all inside a waterproof, shock-resistant Protector case. If you would rather install Visualizer 3D Studio on your own PC, OKM specifies Windows 10, a 1.2 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, a 1920 × 1080 display, an OpenGL 3.3 graphics card, USB 2.0 and 250 MB of free disk space.
Is the Fusion Light waterproof, and will it tell me which metal I have found?
No on both counts, and both are worth knowing before you buy. OKM rates the rod IP40 and states plainly that it is not waterproof, so it is a dry-ground instrument — keep it out of rain, streams and wet sand. The transport case is waterproof; the scanner is not. The operating range is −10 °C to 60 °C, which comfortably covers Gulf and Sahel summer work. And the Fusion Light does not discriminate metals: there is no VLF coil circuit, no conductivity number and no ferrous / non-ferrous target ID. Magnetometer mode tells you a target is magnetic; 3D Ground Scan shows an anomaly's position and extent. If you also want gold-versus-iron identification, pair it with a conventional detector.
