Overview

The OKM Fusion Professional is a 3D ground scanner made in Germany by OKM GmbH. Everything sits in one carbon rod: OKM gives dimensions of 950 mm with a 65 / 80 mm body and a weight of about 1 kg, with a colour touchscreen on the rod itself, so the whole survey is configured in the field with no second box to carry. Two operating modes are available. Live Sound (Magnetometer) is an acoustic and visual magnetic-field measurement that flags ferrous metal near the surface in real time — OKM recommends using it to clear the scan field before an imaging run, and it is also the mode you keep running while you dig. The SRIS search coil at the base of the rod is a genuine search coil for locating metallic objects near the surface, activated manually by the operator; OKM lists rings, earrings, brooches, bracelets, necklaces, coins, buttons and badges among what it picks up. That coil and that live audio are the part of the instrument you can test yourself on a buried target before you ever open the software. The second mode, 3D Ground Scan, records the field line by line and hands the data to OKM Visualizer 3D Studio (Standard Edition) on the supplied pre-configured Windows notebook, which renders a colour-coded three-dimensional view of the measured ground so you can judge the position, size and depth of an anomaly before digging. Menu languages are English, German, French and Spanish, and scans transfer over USB 2.0. The electronics run a Cortex M3 (32 MHz) main CPU with a Cortex M0 (24 MHz) slave, sampling 1,024 values per second at 16-bit resolution, while Bluetooth 5.1 links the supplied wireless headphones out to roughly 10 m. OKM rates the internal battery at about 12 hours of operation from a roughly 3-hour charge, gives an operating range of −10 °C to 60 °C, and specifies IP40 protection — this is a dry-land instrument, not a waterproof one. On depth, OKM's own wording is that customers have found objects down to 21 m (69 ft); we pass that on as a manufacturer statement rather than a measured specification, because usable depth on any ground scanner depends entirely on target size, contrast and soil, and cavities or large chambers image far better than small metal. Supplied with a 2-year OKM warranty.

Key Features

Live Sound (Magnetometer) mode: acoustic and visual magnetic-field measurement that flags ferrous metal near the surface in real time
SRIS search coil (SCMI-15-D / SRIS-18K coil technology), activated manually by the operator, for locating metallic objects near the surface — rings, coins, buttons, badges
3D Ground Scan mode records the field line by line for a colour-coded three-dimensional view of position, size and depth
OKM Visualizer 3D Studio Standard Edition supplied on USB with a pre-configured Windows notebook; scans transfer over USB 2.0
Colour touchscreen built into the rod, with English, German, French and Spanish menus — no separate control box to carry
1,024 measurement values per second at 16-bit resolution; Cortex M3 32 MHz main CPU with Cortex M0 24 MHz slave
One-piece carbon rod, 950 mm and about 1 kg — light enough for long survey days in heat

Frequently asked questions

How deep does the OKM Fusion Professional actually detect?
OKM's own wording is that customers have found objects down to 21 m (69 ft) with this technology, and OKM describes 3D Ground Scan as being used for cavities and large treasures. We pass that on as a manufacturer statement, not as a guarantee we have measured. In practice the depth you get depends on how large the target is, how strongly it contrasts with the surrounding soil, and how carefully you walk the scan lines: a void, a stone-lined chamber or a tunnel gives a far stronger signature than a small metal object. The SRIS search coil and Live Sound mode work near the surface — that is the part of the instrument you can verify yourself on a test target before you go to a real site.
What is the difference between Live Sound and 3D Ground Scan?
Live Sound (Magnetometer) is a real-time acoustic and visual magnetic-field measurement: you sweep, and ferrous metal near the surface responds immediately in the Bluetooth headphones. OKM recommends running it first to clear the field of surface iron so it does not contaminate the image. 3D Ground Scan is the imaging mode: you walk the field line by line, the rod records the measurement data, and OKM Visualizer 3D Studio turns it into a colour-coded 3D view for judging position, size and depth. Most owners use both in sequence — clear the field with Live Sound, run the scan, then go back to Live Sound and the SRIS coil while digging.
Is a computer and the software included, or do I buy them separately?
They are included. The delivery scope contains a pre-configured Windows notebook and a USB flash drive with OKM Visualizer 3D Studio Standard Edition, so nothing further is needed to view and analyse your scans; data transfers over USB 2.0. If you later want the software on another machine, OKM's stated minimum requirements are Windows 10, a 1.2 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, a 1920 × 1080 display, a graphics card with 1 GB RAM and OpenGL 3.3, and at least 250 MB of free disk space.
Can it handle dust, heat and rain in the field?
OKM rates the control unit at IP40 and states plainly that it is not waterproof, so treat it as a dry-land instrument: do not scan in rain and never wade with it. The stated operating range is −10 °C to 60 °C, with storage from −20 °C to 70 °C and 5%–75% humidity, which covers Gulf and Sahel summer fieldwork. The supplied protector case is waterproof and shock-resistant for transport and storage. At roughly 950 mm and about 1 kg the rod itself is easy to carry all day, and OKM rates the internal battery at around 12 hours per charge.
