Overview

The OKM GeoSeeker Mini is a geoelectric survey instrument, not a metal detector. Two power electrodes inject a controlled current into the ground while two voltage electrodes measure the resulting potential difference — the classic Schlumberger four-electrode array — and the control unit converts current, voltage and electrode spacing into apparent ground resistivity in ohm-metres. Because water-saturated ground conducts electricity well and air-filled voids do not, the finished profile reads as a colour-coded section: blue where conductivity is high, as it typically is over a water deposit; yellow and white for ordinary soil; red where resistivity is high, as it typically is over a cavity or an impervious barrier. It cannot find gold, coins or buried metal — resistivity contrast is the only thing it measures. Everything runs from the control unit itself. On the 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen you set a maximum depth and choose three or five scan points, and the screen then tells you which numbered cable marker to move each electrode to for every reading; a measurement takes a minimum of 16 seconds per point and the completed 2D section is stored in 4 GB of internal memory, with no tablet, notebook or PC software involved. OKM states a maximum penetration of 100 m (328 ft) and is explicit about what that needs: 100 m of clear ground on each side of the scan point for the cable spread, a dry surface, and electrodes driven deep enough for solid contact — and it notes that the depths shown are maximum values, often deeper than the real target. At 4.5 kg the control unit doubles as the carrying case, with the four stainless-steel electrodes clipped into the lid, which makes the Mini the portable, self-contained alternative to the full 250 m GeoSeeker. OKM recommends a team of three, ideally five, because the electrodes are moved for every depth at every point. It suits well and borehole siting, village and farm water supply, cavity and void survey, and geotechnical ground checks.

Frequently asked questions

Does the GeoSeeker Mini find gold or buried metal?
No. It is a geoelectric instrument that measures the electrical resistivity of soil layers, so it maps water-bearing ground, cavities and impervious barriers — not metal. Finding a nugget, a coin or a buried box is physically outside what a resistivity sounding can do; for that you need a metal detector or a ground scanner. What it can show is a void or chamber large enough to change the resistivity of the ground, which you would then investigate with other equipment.
If the screen shows blue, is there definitely water there?
Not automatically. Blue means low resistivity, i.e. ground that conducts electricity well — and OKM describes that as typical of a water deposit, not proof of one. Clay, saline ground and some mineralised zones are also highly conductive, and the device cannot tell you whether the water is fresh, brackish or extractable in useful volume. Treat a blue anomaly as a drilling candidate to be confirmed against local geology, vegetation indicators and, ideally, a hydrogeologist or a test bore.
How realistic is the 100 m depth figure?
OKM states a maximum penetration of 100 m (328 ft), and the manual is clear about the conditions. You need 100 m of free ground to the left and right of the scan point to lay out the electrode spread, so cramped or built-up sites cannot reach it. The surface should be dry — not during or straight after rain — and the electrodes must be driven in deep and to an equal depth for good contact. OKM also states that the indicated depths are maximum values and the real depth is often shallower, and that deeper anomalies must be physically larger to register at all. Read a deep result as a coarse layer indication, not a pinpointed target.
What do I need to run it — a tablet, a laptop, how many people?
No tablet, notebook or PC software. Unlike the full GeoSeeker, the Mini runs entirely from its own 3.5-inch touchscreen: you set the depth and the number of scan points there, follow the on-screen electrode instructions, and the finished colour 2D section is displayed and saved to 4 GB of internal memory. People are the real requirement — OKM recommends a team of three, ideally five, because both pairs of electrodes are re-planted for every depth at every scan point. Note that the live voltage, current and resistivity values are only shown during the scan, so write them down if you need them for a report.
