The sensor inside your phone — and what it really measures

Every smartphone carries a tiny magnetometer whose job is to find magnetic north for your compass and map apps. It is a passive sensor: it listens to the magnetic field around it and notices when something distorts that field. Ferromagnetic materials — iron, steel, nickel and of course magnets — bend the Earth's field noticeably, which is why a metal detector app will beep next to a steel door frame, a screwdriver or the magnet inside a speaker. The working range is a few centimetres, and the sensor transmits nothing into the ground. That last detail matters more than anything else in this article.

Why gold is invisible to a magnetometer

Gold is non-ferrous and, technically, weakly diamagnetic — it very slightly repels a magnetic field instead of concentrating it. In practice that effect is so small that even a large gold bar resting against your phone will not move the sensor's reading in any usable way, and a nugget under thirty centimetres of soil has zero chance. You can prove this yourself in two minutes: open any detector app, wave the phone over a steel nail, then over a gold ring. It will sing for the nail and stay silent on the ring. The app is not broken — physics simply does not allow a passive magnetic sensor to see gold.

How gold detector apps fool millions of people

App stores are full of them, and searches for a gold detection program are enormous across our markets — which is understandable, because the phone already replaced the camera, the torch and the radio, so why not the detector? The honest apps really do read the magnetometer, and they beep near iron; users feel them working and assume gold would trigger them too. The dishonest ones show a camera view with a fake radar overlay, animated needles and random signals — some even paint imaginary gold targets on screen to keep you watching advertisements. What actually finds gold: a powered coil, not a compass

A real metal detector does the one thing a phone cannot: it transmits. The search coil pushes an alternating or pulsed electromagnetic field into the ground, and that field induces small circulating eddy currents in any conductive metal below — including non-magnetic metals like gold. Those eddy currents create their own tiny secondary field, and the detector's receive circuitry hears it. Is there any app that can really detect gold?

No. No phone app on any operating system can detect gold, because the phone's only relevant sensor is a passive magnetometer and gold is non-magnetic.
