If you are prospecting in iron-rich African ground, a pulse induction detector is not a luxury — it is the difference between a machine that works and one that screams at the dirt all day. Here is what PI actually buys you, and which of the six machines we stock fits which job and budget.
What PI does that VLF cannot
A PI detector sends short, powerful bursts of current into the ground and measures the decaying magnetic field they leave behind, timing how long the signal takes to fade rather than reading conductivity the way a VLF does. That single design difference is why PI machines largely shrug off the iron-rich soil, hot rocks, black sand and saltwater that make a VLF chatter and lose depth.
On the laterite of Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea or Sudan, that matters more than any spec on a box. A mid-range VLF in heavy mineralisation loses so much depth to ground noise that its theoretical advantage disappears. PI holds its stability, and stability is what lets you actually hear a faint deep target.
The trade-off is real and worth knowing before you buy: PI does not discriminate trash from treasure as sharply as a VLF, so you will dig more targets. On clean ground with small gold near the surface, a good VLF still wins. On mineralised ground with deeper gold, nothing else comes close.
VLF reads the metal. PI ignores the ground. On laterite, ignoring the ground wins.
Minelab GPX 6000 — the default choice
At USD 25,000 the GPX 6000 is the machine we recommend most often, and not because it is the most expensive. It weighs 2.1 kg, runs automatic ground balance and automatic noise cancel, and is genuinely turn-on-and-go. For a prospector working long days in heat, the weight and the simplicity are worth more than a marginal depth figure — GeoSense-PI does the ground work so you can concentrate on listening.
Minelab GPX 5000 — the eight-timing workhorse
USD 14,000, and still the machine many experienced operators prefer. The GPX 5000 gives you eight timings and deep manual control, which in skilled hands lets you tune to a specific patch of ground far more precisely than an automatic machine will. If you know your ground and you like setting a detector up yourself, it is arguably better value than the 6000. If you do not, its complexity will cost you gold.
Minelab GPX 4500 — the value entry into PI
At USD 9,500 the GPX 4500 is the cheapest genuine route into serious pulse induction, and it remains a capable deep machine in mineralised ground. It is heavier and more manual than the 6000, but it finds gold the same way, and for a first PI purchase or a second machine for a team it is hard to argue with the price.
Minelab SDC 2300 — compact, sealed, brutal ground
USD 15,000. The SDC 2300 folds to 40 cm, is waterproof to 3 m, and is built around finding small gold in exactly the ground that defeats other machines — trashy, rocky, wet, worked-over. It is the machine to buy if you work streambeds and rough terrain rather than open flats, and if you need something that survives being thrown in a vehicle every day.
Garrett Axiom — light, fast, sensitive
USD 16,000, under 2 kg, and Garrett's answer to the modern lightweight PI. Ultra-Pulse gives it genuine sub-gram sensitivity, which is unusual for a pulse machine, and the weight makes it comfortable over long days. If you want PI depth without the Minelab price ladder, this is the alternative worth taking seriously.
Garrett ATX — the one that goes underwater
USD 10,000. Military-grade build, fully submersible, and designed to work on land or under water. If your ground includes streambeds, river margins or surf, the ATX solves a problem the others do not: a rain-soaked or flooded control box is the most common avoidable failure we see, and a sealed machine removes it entirely.

- Best all-round choice, long days, minimum fuss — GPX 6000.
- Experienced operator who wants manual control — GPX 5000.
- Cheapest real PI, or a second machine for a team — GPX 4500.
- Small gold in rough, trashy, wet ground — SDC 2300.

Coils matter nearly as much as the machine. A larger coil buys depth on open flats; a smaller one is far more usable in worked pits, scrub and close terrain where most artisanal ground actually is. For most buyers a second coil is a better upgrade than a more expensive detector.
