Only two families of technology genuinely find treasure at depth: pulse-induction detectors swinging large coils, and two-box or frame detectors built for big, deeply buried objects. Depth is physics, not marketing

How deep any real detector reaches is set by the target's size, shape, orientation and conductivity, and by the ground above it — never by the sticker on the box. A large coil or frame antenna projects a wider, deeper field, which is why it can hear a buried cooking pot at two metres yet pass straight over a ring at thirty centimetres: small targets vanish from a big coil's view, and that trade-off is deliberate. A serious cache detector ignores bottle caps and nails so you only dig holes that matter. Pulse induction supplies the other half of the equation: it fires strong magnetic pulses and listens for the echo in the silence between them, a method that shrugs off the mineralised, iron-rich ground that blinds ordinary VLF machines. That is why nearly every credible deep-search detector — Lorenz, the Garrett ATX, Minelab's GPX series — is built on PI.

Lorenz DeepMax Z1 and Z2: the deep-search benchmark

Built in Germany and backed by a 5-year warranty, the Lorenz DeepMax series is the machine the deep-search world measures itself against — and the flagship of this guide. Both models pair pulse induction with the Pulse GBS ground-balancing system, so salty, wet or heavily mineralised ground barely moves the signal. Both accept interchangeable coils, from 26–45 cm search coils for pinpointing up to a 1 × 1 m frame — and beyond, with cable frames covering several square metres — reaching large metal masses at around 3.8 m. The DeepMax Z1 adds built-in depth readout, GPS find logging and software that turns scans into 2D and 3D maps of what lies below. The DeepMax Z2 goes further with Pulse Shaping Technology, a calibrated 000–099 conductivity readout with ferrous or non-ferrous ID, and a multi-channel data logger that maps a whole field before you ever lift a shovel.

Large-coil pulse induction: Minelab GPX and Garrett ATX

If your plans mix natural gold with the occasional deep cache, a large-coil PI machine is the more flexible tool. It reaches very large targets down to about 5 m and — almost unheard of in this class — it discriminates iron, rejecting nails and some ferrous junk that would waste an afternoon with a classic two-box. Realistic depth by target size

  • Single coin or ring: 20–40 cm for most detectors — deep-seekers ignore targets this small by design.
  • Can- or fist-sized object: roughly 0.5–1 m with a large PI mono coil.
  • Cooking-pot or jar-sized cache: roughly 1–2 m with a two-box detector or a 1 × 1 m frame coil.
  • Chest-sized metal mass: 2–3.8 m with large Lorenz frame antennas in favourable ground.
  • Very large objects such as pipes or tanks: up to about 5 m with the XP Xtrem Hunter.
  • A coin at 10 or 20 m, or gold sensed by a phone: fiction — no physics delivers it.
A real deep detector hears a chest at three metres and stays silent on a bottle cap — that trade is the whole point.

Stay legal: permits before shovels

Depth capability comes with responsibility. In nearly every country we serve — Sudan, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt and beyond — antiquities belong to the state, and detecting on or near archaeological sites is a serious offence. The legal paths are clear: licensed gold prospecting on ground you hold a permit for, recovering lost modern valuables with the owner's knowledge, and surveying private land with the landowner's written permission where national law allows it. Rules differ sharply between countries and change often, so check the current law and secure your permits before you dig — and if a find ever looks archaeological, stop and report it to the authorities. Apps, satellites and phone GPR: a reality check

No smartphone can sense buried metal. Treasure apps read the phone's compass chip, which reacts to nearby iron and magnets — it cannot see gold, silver or bronze at any depth, because those metals are not magnetic. Satellite gold-detection services sell coloured screenshots, nothing more. Real ground-penetrating radar does exist, but it is a professional survey instrument that maps soil layering, demands trained interpretation and struggles in exactly the damp, conductive ground where caches tend to be buried — it is not something you download. How deep can a metal detector really find gold?

For a single coin or small nugget, expect tens of centimetres with any hand-swung detector. A large PI coil stretches that to around a metre on bigger pieces. Genuine multi-metre depth exists only for large objects: roughly 1–2 m for a pot-sized cache under a frame coil or two-box, up to about 3.8 m for chest-sized masses under a Lorenz frame antenna, and about 5 m for very large structures with the Xtrem Hunter. Any claim beyond that for small gold contradicts physics, whatever the brochure says.

Which detector is best for deep caches and buried gold?

Match the machine to the mission. For dedicated cache and treasure work with pre-dig imaging, the Lorenz DeepMax Z2 is the flagship and the Z1 the proven alternative. For deep relics with iron rejection, take the XP Xtrem Hunter. For mixed prospecting that must also reach big targets, choose the Garrett ATX or a GPX with a large coil. Do I need a permit to search for buried treasure?

In almost every country, yes — either a prospecting licence, the landowner's written permission, or both. Sudan and Mauritania, for example, run formal licensing systems for artisanal gold prospecting, while antiquities laws across North and West Africa protect archaeological objects wherever they are found. A permit costs far less than a confiscated detector or a court date: confirm the rules for your specific area before your machine ever leaves its case.
